Frequently Asked Questions

This is the last couple days for the contest. Fully completed sheets should be turned in by tomorrow, Wednesday, March 19, to make sure they are entered into the draw. Winners will be drawn Thursday morning, March 20, and announced at first recess.

What is the contest and when does it start?  It starts on your library day, the first week back after Christmas. Students check out books from our library that fit the descriptions on the Bingo sheet squares and fill in the title & author. You must read the whole book be be able to write it down on your sheet. You will need at least 8 weeks to complete this contest, so don't wait to get started!
What books do I read for this contest?  Students need to read books that we have in our library for this contest.
Can I read books from home?  If our library has a copy of the same book, you can read copies from other places, however you will need to temporarily check our copy out (check it our and check it back right away) so the book gets registered under your name.
Can I read books I've read before?  The purpose of this contest is to explore new books so you should be trying to read books you haven't read before.
Can I write down books I read last week?  No, you can only count books you started reading January 6th or later.
Can I use a book in more than one square?  No, each book can only be used for one square on the sheet.
When do I bring in my tracking sheet?  You can either bring in your sheet on your library day once you have completed your first straight line of five-in-a-row squares or you can wait until you have the whole sheet filled in and are ready to enter the Grand Prize Draw. You will always get the small prize for your first Bingo row no matter when you bring it in. It is a good idea to keep your sheet at home so you don't lose it. There are extra copies posted in the library to look at when you're at school.
Can I read graphic novels for this contest?  Yes! As long as the book is a good fit book for your age, and truly fits the description in the square it can be any type of book.
Do I have to read the books myself or can someone read them to me?  You have read the books yourself, but you can read along side a parent or sibling and get help with the big words as much as you need.
What are the prizes?  There is a prize board posted in the library that shows the prizes available for 1st row Bingos. There are 9 prizes students can choose from including mini chocolate bars, bookmarks, pencils, and coupons for spending a recess in the library or taking out extra books. There will be two Grand Prizes - one for Grades 1-3 and one for Grades 4-6. The two Grand Prizes will be LEGO sets and the two winners will be drawn from all the eligible "blackout" Bingo sheets submitted. Those sheets need to be fully filled in, so 25 books read!
What is the Reader's Choice square in the center?  Students can read a book of their choice from anywhere for this square; it doesn't have to be a book we have in the library, or be checked out from our library.
When does the contest end?  All contest sheets must be received by Thursday, March 20, to be entered into the draw. No more prizes will be awarded for 1st rows after March 20.

Note:
This contest is running until Spring Break and will take the place of the Spring Book Fair contest.
